Director's Corner

“What we've got here is failure to communicate…” This famous quote is taken from the film Cool Hand Luke. Although the film was released in 1967, that line probably holds more meaning today that it ever has.

Every living thing depends on communication, either verbal or nonverbal, to survive. I find it ironic that we live in the most technically advanced age of all time, able to connect to any corner of the earth in seconds, yet end up being more isolated than ever.

Does all this “technical connection” take away from the ability to truly communicate? We can’t read a glance in a text. We can’t feel the hug, no matter how many parentheses we type...or the touch of someone’s hand, no matter how many little emojis we download.

The bottom line is that nothing can or will ever replace the sense of connection we humans feel (and need) when we allow ourselves to communicate honestly and openly with one another. We can NEVER be afraid to communicate (and be vulnerable) with each other, no matter how hard the struggle. True and authentic communication is power. Communication is survival at its core.

In The Miracle Worker, Annie not only communicates with a touch of a hand; she touches hearts and opens minds as well…and ultimately, isn’t THAT the goal of true communication?

Enjoy the show!

The 2014-15 theatre season is being dedicated to the memory of Joan Sear Lustig, costume mom extrodinaire. It is with loving memory that we keep her spirit and appreciation for the program alive in our performances this year.
