Gibbsboro Elementary School

 DIRECTOR'S NOTES

A note from Jeannine James, Producer & Director

The Wizard of Oz takes us on a journey to another world and teaches a valuable life lesson. Dorothy learns that everything she truly needs is right in her own backyard and that we don't have to go looking so far. As she says, "There's no place like home." After two years of this global pandemic, I think we have all learned a new appreciation for home and family. I believe we all mirror Dorothy's journey and have recognized the value of home and the people closest to us.

I am extremely proud of the production. The quality of the cast and crew and the commitment of the community that IS GIBBSBORO is awe inspiring. It has been a true joy to watch these kids grow and develop over the last three months.

Due to the global pandemic the only cast members or crew that ever had the opportunity to perform a full scale musical are the 8th graders (and that was during their 5th grade year when they were only 10 or 11 years old.) We started auditions in March with a group of students who were so green they already looked like Emerald City citizens. The nerves were palpable. We started at the very beginning teaching things like stage left and stage right. Over the last 3 months the amount of information they have learned is monumental, the skills and confidence they have gained is absolutely tremendous. It has been such a joy and an honor to be a small part of watching these young performers blossom into the characters you see on stage today.

A truly successful production involves more that what is presented on stage. It is a journey, an artistic experience of growth for everyone involved. I am especially proud of the cooperation, mutual respect, the level of commitment, and the teamwork that has been demonstrated by everyone involved. These students have shown nothing but pride and teamwork, whether on stage or off. They have learned that there are no stars and everyone shares equally in the pride and success of this shared accomplishment.

To my 8th graders - I am so sad to have only one year with you and can't wait to see where the future takes you.

Darrah - you were born to be the scarecrow. Your confidence and creative ideas have been such a tremendous asset to the production.

Ella - dedicated to the core and ready to take on any opportunity.

James - quiet and patient, but ready to bring character on stage.

Lexi - full of energy and excitement, ready to jump in and play any role at any moment, always helpful and supportive of your fellow dancers and a true leader.

Risa - hardworking, committed, focused, and willing to take a chance. You have blossomed so much over the past 3 months into a confident and strong Dorothy.
