Bethany - October 11 - October 12, 2024

Grand Prairie High School

 End Notes

Thank you for joining us for tonight’s production of Bethany.

It’s often said that theatre is an art form that is used to hold up a mirror up to our society, offering a reflection that feels both immediate and timeless. This play was written and set during the housing crisis of 2008 and the economic downturn that followed. It is fascinating, however, that the struggles of the characters — the desperation, the desire to protect what little remains, and the fight for survival — resonate in any era.

As playwright Laura Marks explains, “The play is not a docudrama. It’s not meant to be, ‘This is a slice of life in Stockton, California’ or wherever. To me it’s more chilling if you think, ‘This could happen anywhere, if things got a little bit worse.’”

We’ve worked hard to bring this production to life, not just to tell a story of struggle but also to provoke thought. The dedication and passion of the cast and crew have been truly inspiring, and I am deeply proud of what we have created together.

A special thank you goes out to the parents, friends, and families of our students, thank you for your unwavering support. And to the administration and staff at Grand Prairie High School, thank you for believing in the power of the arts and making this production possible. Lastly, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of the students who have poured their energy and creativity into making this story their own and who have transformed our stage into the world of Bethany. You’ve brought something unforgettable to the stage.

Thank you for joining us on this journey.

Enjoy the show!
