 End Notes

Ladies and Gentleman,

Welcome to Theatre South’s production of As You Like It! This play was written in 1599 by the brilliantly talented William Shakespeare. Though we are still traveling back in time, we are trading in our Renaissance gowns for circle dresses and saddle shoes, since our version of the show is set in the 1950s. Like many of Shakespeare’s plays, As You Like It is a story of trickery and the quest for love. It portrays the dramatic and at times cringeworthy nature of teenagers when they fall in love for the first time, highlighting their tendencies to be impulsive and rebellious. Ripped from their royal life after being banished by the Duke, cousins Celia and Rosalind end up in the Forest of Arden. Here, the overpowering whimsy of the forest results in disguises, complete role reversals, and rekindled relationships. The show is light and fast paced, and its humor proves that some jokes are timeless. There’s a lot to be excited for.

The Theatre South Board would like say a tremendous thanks to our wonderful director Mr. Marr. His ability to give us direction while still letting us explore our own creative ideas has made the production of this show so genuine, enjoyable and unique. He is a mentor to all of us and impresses us everyday with his pure talent. We thank him for inspiring us to reach our full potential. We are so appreciative of his hard work, flexibility and humor. Of course, the show would not go on without our amazing crew who operate under the instruction of our lighting wizard, Deb Dumas, and our construction and technology star, Mr. Motch. Their passion and dedication to Theatre South is deeply appreciated. Finally, we would also like to thank Dr. Gitz, Mr. Duggan and Mrs. Applebaum for always being our biggest fans. We are so lucky to have an administration who is so supportive of the arts.

Enjoy the show!
