Freaky Friday - February 06 - February 08, 2026

Greenport High School

 Synopsis & About the Show

Freaky Friday began as Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel about a mother and daughter who magically swap bodies for a day. Its witty, heartfelt story about family, chaos, and learning to see life from someone else’s perspective quickly became a classic. The tale’s popularity led to several beloved adaptations, including the 1976 Disney film starring Barbara Harris and a young Jodie Foster, a 1995 television version, and the iconic 2003 remake with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, which introduced the story to a new generation.

In the musical, Ellie Blake and her mom, Katherine, couldn’t be more different. Ellie is a fun-loving high school junior who wants freedom, friends, and fun, while Katherine is organized, responsible, and determined to keep her family on track. Their everyday conflicts reach a breaking point when a magical hourglass swaps their bodies, forcing Ellie to take on Katherine’s adult responsibilities while Katherine must survive the chaos of high school life.

As Ellie struggles to juggle Katherine’s job, wedding plans, and family obligations, she also has to contend with Fletcher, her overbearing younger brother, who adds plenty of comic chaos. Meanwhile, Katherine navigates Ellie’s school life, friendships, and crush, Adam, discovering firsthand the pressures and challenges her daughter faces every day. When mother and daughter are thrust into a wild scavenger hunt to save the wedding from disaster, misunderstandings, mishaps, and laughs pile up.

Through these hilarious and heartwarming adventures, Ellie and Katherine learn to appreciate each other’s struggles, discover their own strengths, and realize that empathy and understanding are the keys to family harmony. By the end of their magical experience, mother and daughter are closer than ever, proving that sometimes seeing life through someone else’s eyes is exactly what a family needs.

Mary Rodgers, daughter of legendary composer Richard Rodgers, was a celebrated author, composer, and playwright whose work often explored the humor and heart of family life. In 2016, Disney Theatrical Productions brought Freaky Friday to the stage as a vibrant pop-rock musical, featuring music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, the Tony Award-winning team behind Next to Normal and If/Then, with a book by Bridget Carpenter. More than fifty years after its debut, Freaky Friday continues to charm audiences, reminding us that a little chaos—and a lot of compassion—can bring families closer than ever.
