Director's Note

It goes without saying that this year has been a year like no other, and for drama club, it has been no different.  At the start of the school year, we were uncertain if there would even be theatre at HMS this year.  However, HMS Drama club has met more continuous days this school year, than any other year in my tenure.  We were creative and flexible to make the drama club happen for HMS Students.  We had “Outside” Drama Club in the fall, “Virtual” Drama Club in the winter, and then in the spring, we transitioned into “Live On Stage” Drama Club, something we didn’t think we would be able to do when we began the school year.

This group of young thespians has shown determination and flexibility in the face of many difficult circumstances, but they have also shown a dedication to drama that demonstrates their love of performing.  A small group, they have rehearsed these past months with conditions of social distancing and masking and have still made a production that we are so proud of.

While many of us may be sick of the themes of quarantine by now, they have provided us with some great scenes.  We began the season with a plan to write a show QuaranTEEN on just these themes.  Throughout the virtual days, students wrote scripts and ideas for their own show.  And while that work never turned into a workable script, many of their ideas are still represented in this show “Scenes from a Quarantine.”

As always, it never ceases to amaze me and is the ultimate reward when students discover a new talent they didn’t know they possessed. However, this year students learned and grew together as performers and people, creating bonds as an ensemble that could only be forged by the shared experiences of Teens in the Quarantine.  I hope you enjoy “Scenes from a Quarantine” as much as I have enjoyed working with these wonderful students.
