DIRECTOR'S NOTE:
I remember seeing Matilda when it opened on Broadway. I was literally in the first row center and the kids were flying on swings above my head. I thought to myself almost immediately, "What is this magical world I am about to enter?" Little did I know what would transpire...
Matilda is a musical based on a movie based on a classic childhood novel. I read the book as a child many times and saw the original movie.
I believe that as individuals, we could all stand to learn a lot from Matilda. She is creative, smart, motivated and determined. Even when she doesn't have the support of her family, she still pursues learning in her own ways. She has a healthy curiosity and explores it as she enters the world of books and stories.
I grew up as a voracious reader, much like Matilda, and to this day after almost 14 years of being a Public School English Teacher, I truly believe that the best way to be a better learner,student, and human is to read as much as you can, as often as you can.
I also think Matilda has another very significant lesson to teach us.
You do not have to be perfect to be loved.
You are enough. There are people who will love and cherish you simply for the act of being yourself.
Matilda did not have to do much for Miss Honey to realize how great she was. Miss Honey appreciated her for who she was. To receive that kind of unconditional love is truly a unique and exceptional thing.
We need more Matildas in this world.
We need more Miss Honeys in this world.
Do we need more Trunchbulls? Nope. I think we have plenty.
I hope you all enjoy our amazing students and the stories they tell through their performances. The most unbelievable thing about theatre is the magic of storytelling. Let our actors tell you a story. They are so excited to do so!
