Thank you for taking the time to support local youth theater put on by Harbour Pointe Middle School. I am excited to bring Shrek the Musical Jr. to the Mukilteo community. This show will be my directorial debut and I can’t help but feel this production reflects a bit of my personality through its humor as well.
Sharing my love and passion for live theater through directing this amazing cast has been a dream come true. It takes immense courage to audition and perform on stage in front of an audience at any age, let alone in middle school. What I love about this musical in particular is that it has a powerful message of acceptance for people’s differences. The lyrics from “Freak Flag” frequently come to mind…”What make’s us special, makes us strong” and I couldn’t agree more.
At our first read-through in March and during the early stages, this cast came together quickly to learn all the songs and support one another. Their focus, passion, and personality really show through in their respective characters. Even after watching this show ten times, I still find myself belly laughing and smiling so much my cheeks hurt. My inner theater kid heart bursts with pride seeing them have fun on stage and enjoy the show they’ve worked so hard to perfect. The sunflowers, swamp, windows, castle gate, and rubble pieces you see in the show tonight were all handmade by the cast and parents of this show over many, many hours and are a real point of pride.
I would like to thank my production team, Amanda Findley, Jasmine Gable, Vanessa Small, and Linda Collins for helping me bring this production to life. I couldn't have done it without them. Thank you to the parents of the cast for all their financial support, finishing our set, and making sure the costumes fit nicely. Finally, thank you to the Kamiak High School tech crew for a smooth-running show, and Bryan Sullivan for answering all my Kamiak PAC questions.
When that final curtain closes and the stage is struck, I will miss hearing the laughter of everyone every day at rehearsals. Theater has always been a special place for me, and to be able to make a safe place for that creativity, and that expression here at HP, well…that’s what it’s all about.
