Director’s Note
When I read through Matilda in July of 2022, the first image I had of “Miracle” was that of a door, spotlit from above, waiting to let children in for that first number. The audience would know from that first moment that we were opening a door and taking them on a journey about the lifesaving nature of imagination.
I would revisit the motif of doors several times in my planning for the show, and in fact, it was the first set piece that I made my husband build. Watching the cast and crew get excited about going in and out of the door is something I will never forget about the show.
The door is meaningful as a symbol of transition and movement. My life has had lots of doors opened to me, including returning to the theater -- one of the best decisions I have made in a long time. Theater is such a unique experience that adds creativity, energy, and life to all its participants. I hope your kids all felt the same way, and I hope they are all glad they opened the door to Matilda!
