This show is dedicated to my incredible group of graduating seniors who embody everything that we hope a Haven student becomes through participating in our program. Every year, saying good-bye to a graduating class is a bittersweet experience for me, but this year hits a little different. These are the ones who came to me at 5, 6, and 7. The ones who grew up alongside me as I’ve developed into the director and educator I am today. These are my pandemic kids. The ones who met with me outside, socially distanced in masks before the schools had opened and we weren’t seeing anyone else but our families. And, in turn, they became family, and I am forever grateful for the honor of knowing this exceptional group of young people.
When I left my job as a classroom teacher 17 years ago, one of the key reasons was because I wanted to create a space where I could walk life with my students for more than just one year. I wanted a place where my students could call home throughout the many challenges that come along with growing up. What I didn’t expect is the deep bond that I would build doing life with my students. It has been one my greatest joys to watch an entire generation grow up in this place we call Haven.
Class of 2024, the hole that you will leave as you graduate out will be felt by all. While I’m sure many will agree that we will miss seeing your talent on display on our stage, what I will miss most is your leadership. Despite the challenges you’ve faced navigating your coming-of-age during a global pandemic, you lead with kindness and commit to creating a safe space for those around you. You work hard, but with the purpose of seeing what you can create together rather than what accolades you can earn on your own. You carry with you a wisdom beyond your years and a creative spirit the helps you persevere even when things don’t go as planned.
Once again, you delight and surprise me by tackling yet another show I thought would be too difficult to accomplish. And you do it because, well, that’s just who you are: talented, focused, tenacious, committed, flexible, and, most importantly, kind. I can’t wait to see where life takes each one of you. I know that the world will be a better place with you in it because Haven is a better place with you here. Thank you for growing up with me.
