Director's Note
Welcome to the magical opening of the HRHS Thespian production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella! Cinderella is perhaps the most universal of all fairy tales. There are countless versions of the story in every culture. With each version the timeless enchantment of the story is reborn, and usually that version tells you a lot about the culture in which it was produced. The Brothers Grimm version is a harrowing peek into the harsh lifestyle of the time. The Disney version, with the mice and the cat named Lucifer, reveals the largely religious point of view of middle America in the 1950s and the Drew Barrymore adaptation of the 90s is symbolic of the girl power movement. Our production will follow the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that was first presented in 1957 with Julie Andrews as Cinderella. A few of the things that I hope people take away from our version is the Beauty of the world, the importance of Kindness and the possibility of the Future. As I'm sure you know, Impossible things are happening everyday!
