I’ve never been one to pick themes for the productions in a particular school year. However, it’s happened a few times by accident. A few years ago, when the seniors were freshmen, it seemed to be the “Outcast Year” with The Crucible, The Grinch, and Hairspray. And now, again, our shows seem to have a theme … “Finding Fulfillment Year”. It sometimes doesn’t take much to do so, as the characters this year will teach us.
This is my eighth straight play at Independence and easily one of my favorites. The seniors got to see this show their freshmen year at the thespian conference and everyone fell in love. I knew we’d do this show at some point, but I was waiting for the right time, the right group. This could not be more perfect! With their talents, hearts and work ethic, I knew they’d be able to take on this show.
The Curious Savage is simple, while still complex. On the surface, it’s sweet and charming but underneath, there are layers of depth. It’s a story about family, greed, sanity, and strong-willed and broken minds. The characters have their moments of hilarity but they are also very recognizable. We’ve probably even seen some before – walking by them on the street, befriending them, or catching the reflection in the mirror.
These students, in both casts, take on these roles so beautifully; careful to respect their character while bringing them to life on stage. The crew, from make-up to costumes and booth to house, support the production as we go back to over 60 years ago to a different era but with people that are just as familiar today.
I am incredibly thrilled to work with an amazing group of students. They are led by a class of unforgettable seniors who have carried on the legacy of excellence and the three other classes are following suit with their drive, ambition and talents. It’s going to be a wonderful year and this is just the beginning.
Thank you for supporting the arts here at IHS! We hope you enjoy this fabulous production.
Sincerely,
