Chrysanthemum: The Musical began as a school club activity for Michael Hill’s students who shared a love of musical theatre. The club that focused on the joyful exploration of storytelling and song quickly inspired the creation of a script and the addition of three original songs. As the project blossomed, its creator reached out to beloved children’s author Kevin Henkes in hopes of receiving his blessing to expand Chrysanthemum into a full musical. With his gracious support and enthusiastic blessing, this dream blossomed to life.

The creative team secured the rights to expand Chrysanthemum into a full musical inspired by many of Henkes’ cherished characters, creating a rich, interconnected world drawn from his books. Audiences will meet familiar friends from Chrysanthemum, Chester’s Way, Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse, Owen, and Wemberly Worried, all woven together into one heartfelt theatrical experience.

Created by Michael and Lisa Hill, Chrysanthemum: The Musical is their loving tribute to teachers and children everywhere—and to the extraordinary way music and storytelling can bring people together through respect, love, and understanding.

For all the young people who “wilt” from bullying or unkindness, this story explores the journey of self-acceptance. Through laughter, friendship, and encouragement, it reminds us that the very things that set us apart are often what make us special. Chrysanthemum: The Musical celebrates kindness, empathy, and the courage to speak up for others, showing how a supportive community can help each of us grow into who we were always meant to be.
