42nd Street - November 14 - November 16, 2014

Jackson High School

 Director's Notes

The concept of the underdog becoming the champion has been close to our hearts since the inception of the American Dream.    Performing on Broadway is one of those American dreams.   Every dancer, singer and actor has imagined themselves, at one time or another, performing on Broadway.  42nd Street is the embodiment of the dream.  Young Peggy Sawyer embarks on an adventure as she leaves her hometown of Allentown, PA for the Big Apple to try to achieve her dream of performing on Broadway.   We know it is a long shot- a million to one, but we are all rooting for Peggy.

As educators we are in the business of helping children “prepare” for their dreams.  Perhaps that is why this musical resonates so much with us.  We cannot help but smile at the idea of young people working so diligently to achieve what they want.   We want to reward that and cheer about it.  To know you have had a small impact on that realization is truly one of the most wonderful feelings as a teacher.

We would like to recognize all of our students and their talents tonight.  Many of them arrive at school each day around 6:30am and leave 12 hours later.  Their energy is contagious and they work hard because they have a passion for what they do...performing.  It is rewarding for us to be a small part of their high school experience.

As you watch and listen to our JHS students tonight, join us in the celebration of the America dream.  If we all can experience a bit of that dream through Peggy and the other kids onstage, we cannot help but smile.  “Come and meet those dancing feet.... on the avenue we're taking you to....42nd Street”!
