Shrek The Musical - May 17 - May 19, 2019

James Island Charter High School

 End Notes

Notes from the Director:

The theme of Shrek is accepting who you are, for what you are, and loving not only yourself, but your peers for their differences. Nothing could be more appropriate, in my opinion, for the first musical performed at James Island Charter High School in many, many years. Our students are unique, talented, and hardworking young men and women, and they need to be celebrated for their individualism.

Students and staff have worked incredibly hard to make this production come to fruition. I am a complete novice when it comes to directing a production of this caliber and we could not have accomplished this amazing goal without helping and believing in each other.

First, I would like to thank Mr. Bateman and Mrs. Quinn, not only for their steadfast confidence in me, but for their guidance and leadership throughout this entire process. Mrs. Quinn was responsible for every single costume, prop and set design the audience sees and, if you are familiar with theatre, you will understand what a huge undertaking this entails. In addition to providing these tangible objects, her enthusiasm, amazing choreography skills, and knowledge and love of theatre permeated the entire project.

Mr. Bateman is the man behind the amazing voices you will hear on stage tonight. His ability to work with the students and relate to them is incredible. He has not only been an inspiration and helping hand to me, he has encouraged our students to come out of their shells and not be afraid to be heard both onstage and off. His background and knowledge of musical theatre is unparalleled, and this production would not have been possible without him.

I would also like to thank all the other faculty members and staff for their support in putting on this show. Your assistance is essential and we sincerely thank each and every one of you.

Our students have worked very hard in order for this musical to happen. Both the Drama and Chorus classes have been working ALL YEAR to plan for these three performances, and I could not be prouder of them. A special shout-out to all my seniors, who have spent their days practicing choreography, scene after scene, and song after song, when many of their peers have been overtaken with senioritis. Your commitment to this show shows fortitude and strength of character, and each of you is one in a million.

To our audience, thank you so much for your support. Parents, family members, and friends make putting on a show like this worthwhile, and we appreciate everything you have done for us and for your student. Shrek is a fun, uplifting, and hilarious musical. We encourage you to laugh loud and applaud where you see fit. We hope that by the time you walk out tonight, you will not be afraid to “let your freak flag wave, let your freak flag fly!”
