A Note From the Director,
The Music Man is a classic American musical, featuring a "period pop" score and hi-energy, stylized, ballet-influenced, period choreography. While the plot about the con-man falling for the librarian may seem a bit far-fetched in our modern minds as we skeptically think of their future together, my heart goes out to the kid with the lisp.
I love the sub-plot involving Winthrop discovering his confidence...and finding it through music. I truly believe that helping our students find their "thing" in life, their source of passion and self-worth, is one of the best things about teaching. I am proud that so many of this enormous cast and crew have all been open to trying new things like babershop singing, boys ballet classes, using power tools, researching costumes and props, and for some, singing and dancing for the very first time.
Despite this show's enormous size, you will find that every person involved has given an important, special, and unique gift to this production, and each has their moment to shine, whether on stage or behind the scenes. They've created art, gained friendships, supported each other through college acceptances and Latin exams, laughed with each other, shared their nervousness, and generally had a great time. It's been quite a journey.
So sit back, relax, and let the Phils do their "thing" and transport you to another world. Slow down and set for a spell. Enjoy a small town Fourth of July celepration, 1912-style. Welcome!
