OUR TOWN Director’s Note
Welcome to our staging of the 1938 Pulitzer Prize winning classic Our Town. Having never produced a non-musical play for the main stage, we couldn’t be more delighted that we got to tackle the depth and beauty of the material Thornton Wilder provides in his script.
This is a play in three acts. Each act captures with simplicity and grace, the natural cycles of life and relationships. It is poignant, touching, and exceedingly human. As I get older I’m struck by the passing of time. In my younger years I thought it would take forever to be middle aged. And now, I’m here and it all happened in a blink. As I reflect, it’s humbling and powerful to know that there are others in their younger years thinking the exact same thing I once thought. They’ll be where I am soon enough, and my time on earth will be past. This story of Our Town so aptly captures the essence of humanity, community, heritage and legacy. In a way, it is OUR town that you’ll see on display. The innocence of youth, the hope of what is yet to come, the moments of grief that are co-mingled into the moments of beauty; all of it is special and profound.
We invite you to courageously take “time to look at one another.” Savor the moments. Be content.
