I read over 35 scripts this summer in search of the perfect show to start my first full four years at LBHS. Emma is not commonly done at high schools for various reasons - it is a difficult, long show that requires impeccable commitment from its actors. I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite shows I have directed so far, and I think you will soon learn why. We all can relate a little bit to Emma. Emma means well, but sometimes she gets herself into trouble. She is in her own world, has immense privilege within her society, and doesn't quite realize it. Emma is a story about love and humility. Austen's stories are always tied to the treatment and societal expectations of women in this time period, and this version really leans into that commentary. Even over 200 years later, so many elements of this story are still relevant- especially to today's teens: romance, jealousy, miscommunication, unreciprocated love, sorrow, and celebration. I hope you all enjoy this show as much as I do, have a good laugh, and experience the genius that is Kate Hamill's adaptation of Jane Austen's timeless story.
