I believe it is important to take this ridiculous show for what it is -- satire. Urinetown is not a part of the real world, but real things happen to these characters, and it’s message is timely. What circumstances made these characters the way they are? Among both the rich and the poor characters, we see people who are selfish, violent, uninformed, and impulsive as a result of the society that shaped them. These characters were not all born "bad", something made them that way. I hope in watching this show, you find the balance between its absurdity and it’s truth. Neither side is without fault in this story, and it’s ending serves as a cautionary tale. How far are we truly from Urinetown? And do we have the time and education to change our fate? I encourage all and any audience reactions to this show – humor, disgust, anger, sadness, shock – but instead of leaving it there, to think about why you feel that way. I am so overjoyed to end my first full 4 years at LBHS with this show, and with this awesome group of students. Special shout-out to the punk rock women who raised me, this show is for you.
