“What’s it called? Why would you choose a show like that?” Well, here you are. Thank you for coming to Urinetown: the Musical. We appreciate you taking a chance on a show with an unusual title. But why choose it, you ask?
The simple answer: It has clever and incredible Tony Award-winning music and scripting, an ensemble cast that features more students – giving them a chance to shine. Urinetown absurdly satirizes corporate greed, revolutionary idealism, musical theatre and itself. The characters are zany and it’s entertaining for all ages.
The intellectual answer: Urinetown is built on the principles of German “Epic Theatre” made popular by artists such as Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. The goal was to detach from emotion and take a satirical, and perhaps cynical, look at the systems that control society. It addresses its audience directly by breaking the 4th wall and never lets you forget you’re watching a play . . . in this case a play with an odd title.
The real answer: IT’S HYSTERICAL! You get to check your brain at the door and be entertained by this group of talented students.
We don’t take for granted that we are supported by an administration and board that trust us to entertain and not offend…even when the title is awful. We thank you for coming and hope you enjoy Urinetown: The Musical!
Hail Malthus! Thomas Robert Malthus . . . look him up!
