Fiddler on the Roof - April 21 - April 25, 2014

Lehi High School

 End Notes

Director's Note:

Of what one might consider the old school musicals of our time, Fiddler on the Roof is my favorite. I love the journey of the characters, people just trying, as each of us do, to carry out their lives even when things are changing and we step into unfamiliar territory. We try to hold on like a fiddler on a roof; try to keep our balance when it seems impossible or shakey. This musical, now fifty years old, lasts because of the truth it tells, the importance of family, reliance on a higher power, and determination of a collective that can stay friends through broken promises and let new people into their lives.

Just this past week done awful things are happening across the world. Jews in the Ukraine were targeted outside of their synagog during passover last Thursday by radicals. The problems of a hundred years ago, when our play is set, still exist today. And perhaps a reminder, even in musical form, will help us to keep moving forward and keep a hold of our families... Though we cling to our traditions, our truth, we must learn as Tevye does, that aside from mere common practice of tradition, we need to understand why we do what we do and what is most important in a changing world, our families.

Tevye makes an effort do do something very foreign to him, he tried to understand his children, respect them as intelligent people, and show them his love. I think that is something we all can do. I try as a teacher though it's hard and I fail often. His daughters make an effort to connect with him and let him know how much they need him. That is one thing I hope my students take from this piece.

Our colorful set is a celebration of the inner spiritual and vibrant lives of the people in our story; despite their seemingly drab existence. Inside they are full of life and color. I am forever indebted to Randy Blackburn for bringing this stage to life and for being the rock I can lean on this year. Thank you to Rick for not giving up and fighting, like these people do, when it's gets hard. Thank you Cheryl for stepping in and bringing her brilliance and passion to the stage and inspiring our students. Thanks so much Katie for going above and beyond and making us sound great. Thank you Mason for keeping me above water. Thanks to everyone who is a part of this program and this supportive community. Thank you for letting drama teach and touch lives.
