When I wrote the curriculum for CPRS I purposively found diverse voices from all over the world; Native Voices, England/Australia/Africa. Material that did not focus exclusively on addiction. Recovery as containing a multitude of skills and knowledge.

When done right, a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist is doing things for people that no one else will or can….open up a space for people to be able to tell the truth without fear of consequences.

My older sister was my biggest support. She knew who I truly was and she knew where addiction took me and the person that I had become through it was not my true self and was not who I was. She believed in me in my darkest moments like looking visibly not like myself, she would look at me like I was still Erika and that meant so much to me. So just still believing in that person and making them feel like a human through it all because I was still in there, I was small, that voice was there though, my Erika voice was very subtle but in there and when my sister would look at me like a human and not like the rest of the world that made me feel hopeful like I could get this.

Certified Peer Recovery Specialists are vital. We get to meet people where they are at. We support them with whatever pathway they choose to live their best life. We can be right along side them through it all because we have been through it ourselves. Peers are filling the gap in the recovery field and are an integral part of the team.

I love that I am able to have a career in the recovery field. Helping others in a way that I was helped or wish I was helped keeps me grateful for my own recovery.
