As a child, I loved Dr. Seuss books and they became the first books I was able to read alone. When I became a parent, I shared many Dr. Seuss books with my own child. I’m sure many of you share this experience. The amazing genius of Ted Giesel (Dr. Seuss) helped us all think in new ways. Seussical combines several of his favorite whimsical rhyming stories and most memorable characters to create a wonderful adventure. Together we will journey to strange places full of bright colors and imaginary creatures as the story unfolds. We hope you enjoy the show and the remarkable ideas and performances of an exceptional group of students.
My approach to the show was to incorporate as many student ideas into our designs, choreography, a costuming as possible. Students from theatre, art, band, and chorus have joined together to form the cast and to create the sets you see on stage. It’s remarkable what young people can do when given the resources and support to take risks and try new things.
I also decided to incorporate a modern trend in theatrical staging into our show. We hope you enjoy the animated projections used as our backdrop for the magical world of Dr. Seuss. These projections are used with permission from Broadway Motion Design and their use is made possible by the hard work of Mr. Keith Ellison, HPAC Manager and Guru.
On a personal note, I’d like to take a moment to publically thank my Musical Director, Beth Massengale for her contributions to this show and all past Luella High School Musical Theatre productions. This show marks our 17th collaboration and ends the tradition. Ms. Massengale is taking over both the Chorus and Theatre responsibilities at Eagles Landing High next school year. Please join me in thanking her for many years of dedicated service to Luella High and wishing her a bright future on her new endeavor.
The future for the Arts at Luella will continue with new collaboration and I hope you will plan to join us again next year as we continue the spring musical tradition that began with opening of Luella High School. We will open next year with our competition one-act play in October. I hope to see you in the audience again. Students of LHS, our door is opened for anyone who wants to participate in our productions.
Regards,
Laurie Tyson
