For four years I called the Flynn my place of work, but also my home. I would often gaze at the art deco motifs of fiddlehead ferns and phoenixes, and be reminded of favorite memories, some that were my own, and some that were shared with me by people who loved it as much as I do. I admired the black and white archival photos lining the lower lobby, and was awed by the intertwined legacies of Lyric Theatre Company and the Flynn. I marveled at the innovation, the resiliency, and the ongoing desire to face something uncertain and build an artistic home. This awe has only increased in the past eight months, as the entire Lyric community bravely moved into a new stage of its legacy.
This community has made masks and music in their living rooms. It has taken us to the mountains to move us through song, and might even take us to North Pole next month. Most of all, it welcomed new members to our community, supported a new team, and a brand new way to make and stream theatre.
The stories we will tell on screen represent so many stories that you will not get to see in this show. This production is about all the stories you lived during these last months. You auditioned from your bathrooms, choreographed on your porches, rehearsed from your car. You’ve sewed late into the night, opened your homes on the weekends, turned a conference room into a hospital set. You sent late night emails, traded spaces, took headshots. You helped us find our light, filled the hallways with percussion, and continued to mix and edit long after we’d called it a wrap on set.
Together we have dreamed, reimagined, reinvented. For all of this, and more, I thank you. To our sponsors, members, volunteers, audience, and the greater community, you have made this experience possible. It was honor to help create this piece, and an even higher honor to get share to share these songs and stories with you now.
This new world, this new adventure, is the culmination of all these moments, and more. It’s about one moment, the moment you see this world will be fine.
