From the Director
Since I was a child I have listened to the soundtrack for the film Oklahoma. It was one of my mother's vinyl records and I about wore it out, it and The King and I. I attribute my singing ability to listening to Gordon McCrae and imitating him. I was once able to play Curley McClain professionally at the Mountaineer Dinner Theatre in Teays Valley, WV many years ago. I have wanted to direct it for a long time and felt that I had the students to do it.
I went to see the show on Broadway recently and was appalled by the "new" production was done. They completely butchered "America's Musical". After all, Oklahoma was first produced in 1943 and it changed the way American broadway musicals were done. It was the first musical where people talked to each other and then broke out into song. Before Oklahoma, musicals were operettas with everything being sung, think Gilbert and Sullivan.
I hope you enjoy the show this evening.
