 Theater Etiquette

At PS23, we strive to educate our students in the Performing Arts. We also want to educate you, the audience member, on how to make tonight's performance an amazing experience, not only for yourself, but for other audience members around you, as well as the performers on stage and the teachers leading them.  Please review these simple yet important reminders on etiquette in the theater.

  • Arrive to the theater on time.  If you arrive after the performance begins, please wait until a song is finished before taking your seat.

  • Visit the restroom before the performance begins.

  • Turn off your cell phone or, if it must be on, put it on vibrate. Do not speak on the phone during the performance. If you must call the person back, do it outside during intermission or after the show has finished.

  • Don't speak during the performance.  Whispering is still speaking, so only in an emergency.

  • Please be considerate of those around you when taking photos and video of your children.  The light emitted from a camera phone or tablet can be extremely distracting and annoying to other audience members.  There will be plenty of time to take photos of your children after the performance.

  • Remain in your seat for the entire performance. If you must leave, exit during intermission. In an emergency, wait for an appropriate break in the show. It is rude to get up in the middle of a quiet moment...rude to the actors and your fellow audience members.

  • Do not eat or drink during the performance. Please enjoy the available refreshments before the show starts, during intermission, or after the show is over.

  • Do not put your feet up on the seats or balcony and do not kick the seat in front of you.

  • Do laugh when the performance is funny.

  • Do applaud when it is appropriate during the performance.

  • Do applaud when the performance is over.  This tells the performers and crew that you appreciate their work.  If you thought their work was exceptional, give them a standing ovation!

  • Do not whistle or scream out to the performers except for a Bravo or Brava.
