Directors Notes

Directing this play for a second time within a year has been a fascinating and deeply rewarding experience.  It has given our company the chance to go deeper into the exquisite and harrowing world of the playwright, and to discover what we may have overlooked the first time.

As an ensemble, we discussed and found a compelling spirituality sprinkled throughout the play,  All the characters in "The Night Alive" are suffering: grief, loss, broken families, violence, mental illness, and they are also looking to be saved, to save, and to be loved.  McPherson leads us not only to ask "What's going on?" but "Where are we going?".  "What are we doing with our time here?".   "What reprieves are there from suffering ?"   "Is there truly a place, a dimension where time won't matter anymore?"

My wish is that you might find an answer or two tonight, in a line that strikes you, a moment that transports you, or some wisdom that connects you to the characters in this Dublin bedsit. It has been a privilege to take this journey again with Molly, Haydn, and Thomas and I thank the incredible institution of The Stella Adler Studio for their encouragement and support.

My deepest gratitude to everyone involved in the creation of this show.
