The Gift of the Magi - December 02 - November 05, 2021

Marshalltown Community Theatre

 Introduction

The play takes place in the early 1900's in the East Side of New York City. Most of the story occurs in the humble apartment of newlyweds James and Della Dillingham Young.  It is two days before their first Christmas and they each want to make this a special holiday for the other.

The play is set at a time in our history when the economy is not doing well and many people are unemployed. This is also a time when Christmas preparations are much more subdued and do not start start before Halloween.  Christmas trees and decorations in the home have become common, as are special meals, cookies and cakes.  Christmas music is heard on street corners, but it comes from carolers rather than sound systems.

The playwright did not indicate scenes or acts, so the audience will observe the actors adding and removing necessary items as the story unfolds. We will take a brief intermission as we acknowledge that a folding chair is not as comfortable as a padded theater seat.

Our gratitude is given to St. Paul's for allowing us to rent this space for rehearsal and the staging of this production.  We are hopeful that this trip to Christmas past brings you Comfort and Peace during the holiday season.
