Almost, Maine - October 25 - October 26, 2019

Mater Dei Catholic High School

  DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Love is . . . .

The continuation of those two words has been defined by philosophers, ministers, poets, cynics, and the rest of us...the common man or woman. This does not mean we are all thinking the same thing. Some people remember the first kiss, the first look, long love that you slip into, or the love that broke and left you behind. Our relationships are simple and complicated, full of highs and lows. That is what makes the stories found in Almost, Maine so sweet.

This play is a snapshot of nine stories told honestly and sweetly, happening at the same chronological time, in different places in the town of Almost, in the state of Maine, under the brilliant Northern Light's sky. Each character’s journey of love takes us, the audience, to different places, both physically and emotionally.  As we peek into these characters’ lives, we get to see memories of ourselves and the loves we’ve had, lost, dreamt of, or hope to find soon. To embrace love, we must accept every aspect of it.

At Mater Dei, students are often confronted with “issues” of love, both in the classroom and in their personal lives. In the classroom, we have discussions about love and all the variations in which it can take form. Most importantly, even with our varying opinions and experiences, we can seek comfort in knowing that we have the greatest love of all, offered to us from the love of Jesus Christ, who commands us to “love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34b). I hope this play sparks a conversation within you to discover what “love is.”

Thank you for joining us on this journey to Almost, Maine. The view is beautiful, because it is a view into the exciting and bumpy road of love.

Enjoy the Show!
