Into The Woods JR. - May 06 - May 08, 2021

Meade County High School

 Notes from the Directors

Welcome to the woods! A place of uncertainty and possibility brimming with stories waiting to be told.  There cannot be a better metaphor for the past year!  We all ventured into the unknown and found the fortitude to overcome, to learn and to grow.  Our cast this evening will present a shortened version of INTO THE WOODS, one where the characters have faced their fears, reached their goals, achieved their dreams and are looking forward to more of life’s journey.  We would like to dedicate this show to the MCHS Class of 2021!  You have made it through the woods!

Into the Woods, with music by Stephen Sondheim and book and lyrics by James Lapine, debuted on Broadway in 1987, winning Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical. In 2014, it was released as a movie version by the Walt Disney Company, starring Meryl Streep.  The musical tells the story of a childless baker and his wife, who are cursed by an evil witch.  The couple ventures into the forest to find the ingredients that will reverse the witch’s curse and restore her former beauty: a milk-white cow, hair as yellow as corn, a blood-red cape, and a slipper of pure gold. Along the way, they meet Cinderella, a pair of handsome Princes, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack (of beanstalk fame), each on a quest to fulfill their own wish.  Danger and adversity lead to revelation and self-discovery along the way.

A musical is one of those all encompassing projects requiring loads of teamwork, communication and collaboration.  We have been blessed by the talent by Jennifer Shelton, Dave and Angela Liles - these generous artists have worked tirelessly to create the stage/scenery/costumes for our storytelling.  We are most grateful to them, and to all of you for attending this evening.  Our students are happiest when they are performing for you - and they have waited for this opportunity far too long!  This production is certainly a highlight of this extraordinary school year, possible only by the enthusiasm and perseverance of this talented cast.  Enjoy the show!
