A Note From the Director
Thank You for all the hard work, my wonderful Cast and Crew!
Many years ago, I saw Peter and the Starcatcher at a State One-Act Competition, and I fell in love with the witty dialogue and revolving set design. While there are hundreds of versions of the classic Peter Pan story by J. M. Barrie, this origin-story retelling remains my favorite. I think Rick Elice wrote it for English teachers, with all the literary and pop culture references. I’m sure you know my fondness for rewriting classic scripts. I have at least a dozen in my Google Drive beyond what I’ve already put into production (Taming of the Shrew, Cyrano, Scapin, Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Romancers, Antigone.) However, I didn’t have much desire to adapt Peter and the Starcatcher. In fact, when I got the note from MTI that the play could not be cut to one act, other than for competitions, I was happy. It meant we got to do the Mermaid Song! But, it also meant that we got to keep all the meaningful parts that are generally cut from the original script: Peter’s mistreatment by Grempkin, his longing for a real family: the dialogue that shows the real heart of the show.
With Spring Production, we once again get to welcome new actors to the stage from MMS, and we get to welcome back alumni. I love to see this range of talent. It helps to build community, but it also prepares upcoming actors for Fall One-Act Competition. A shout-out to my seniors, many of whom have been with MHS Performing Arts for all 4 years of high school (and some for their middle school years as well.) We are graduating some legends this year! I promise you won’t have to run the mollusk chase one more time, and Alanna, I won’t make you step out to say your line, just to send you back to run it again. It was worth it though, wasn’t it? Even with dual enrollment and senioritis, y’all came locked in at rehearsal, showing the underclassmen how it’s done. Overall, my cast and crew have made this production low-stress, for which I can’t thank you enough. Being the only adult on set and juggling soccer has been a challenge, but y’all have been steady and patient this entire run.
I want to put in a special thank-you to my loving husband for waking up at 4 am every day to make bagels to fundraise for this show. His bagels are amazing, and with the funds, we have purchased all of the props, umbrellas, grass skirts, glowing necklaces, and paint we needed for the production. A shout-out to my 4th block class as well for all the time spent burning fingers with heat guns and stringing fabric flowers into leis. Actors cannot shine without their crew, and y’all have been fantastic. Finally, thank you for being part of our audience. And now, we present to you our version of: Peter and the Starcatcher
Your Director,
Mrs. O’Conner
