People have been asking for weeks ..what is HOME? And although I know they were speaking in a literal way about the show's structure and content... it really made us, on the Home Artistic team, think of the answer in a new way?
Where do you come from? It's such a simple question, but these days, of course, simple questions bring ever more complicated answers. And if "Where do you come from?" means `Which place goes deepest inside you and where do you try to spend most of your time?' Well, our whole life is really a culmination of places, people, and experiences. And if somebody suddenly asks me, "Where's your home?", I don’t I think first about people..about experiences. My home would have to be whatever I carried around inside me. This past year has forced us all to look upon familiar sights with new eyes as time virtually came to a standstill and we looked upon our homes with new eyes. And with new eyes, even your home becomes something different. Movement, discovery, progress, travel are all fantastic privileges, and ones I’m sure we all are yearning to get back to. But movement, ultimately, only has a meaning if you have a home to go back to.
This project is an exploration of all these questions and this cast has navigated this exploration with a maturity and a sense of pride in which I’ve never seen form a group of actors before. We set out to create something with nothing about 7 weeks ago and devised and had discussion and this cast authored and created this work your about to see. It was part therapy, part social hour, part artistic exploration, part self discovery, and for all of us in different ways a coming HOME story. We set out to make art- in the form of a theater based movie. This show is part theatrical experience explored through the medium of film. But as with everything this year- the challenges were different. You are witnessing tonight virtually our first run through of a sequence of moments that explore the meaning of home and it’s ever changing role in all our lives. We ask you to go with an open mind on this journey with us tonight and remember... HOME, in the end, is of course not just the place where you sleep. It's the place where you stand.
