 The Story 

 

ACT ONE

Rose has just been fired from her job at the gentleman's club on Times Square when she meets Rocky in the subway. He's had a bad day too, his agent, Max, has dropped him because people aren't interested in Elvis impersonators anymore. The two had met years before at the Tropicana in Vegas when they both young with a lot to look forward to. She was a showgirl and he was a lounge singer. A lot had changed over the years. When they meet unexpectedly on the Brooklyn Bridge they're considering taking the plunge but decide to go for Chinese food instead. The next time they meet is in the subway. Milt has just fired Rose and Rocky is brooding over Max cutting him. Rose reluctantly agrees to Rocky taking her uptown back to her apartment.

 

ACT TWO

A romance develops between Rose and Rocky. He's sure meeting her in the subway is a sign from up above that they are meant for each other. Rose thinks that's all behind them. But she's starting to like the guy, dorky though he is. She recalls an old lover, Roger. She had thought nuptials back then but it turned out Roger was a serial womanizer, married with kids. She wonders whether Rocky is also just in it for laughs at her expense. Meanwhile Rocky is developing the understanding that win over Rose and have the life they both should have he is going to need to prove himself a success. He's conscience, Heart, tells him his a singer and should sing. Rocky signs up for a TV talent show audition. When he tells Rose, she's nonpulsed. That shakes Rocky but he's determined to audition and win the contest. When he arrives he finds Max is giving the audiitions. Meanwhile, Rose gets a phone from Roger and goes to see him downtown, a few blocks from Rocky's audition.

 

ACT THREE

It's been a while since Rose saw Rocky, the breakup was hard on both of them. Rose has come to regret the way she treated Rocky and misses him. When he comes to her dad's funeral wake to bring flowers, she wants to reconcile but Rocky has been too deeply hurt and goes away. Rose has come into some money. The winnings from the Atlantic City Jackpot her father won before a heart attack killed him. They can have all the things Rocky's dreamed about. But Rocky is hurt too deeply and goes away until they meet again back on the Brooklyn Bridge.
