Legend has it that when renowned comedian Bob Hope was asked where he wanted to be buried, he told his wife, “Surprise me” ― and she did; the centenarian's final resting place is marked by a lovely monument at the San Fernando Mission graveyard. True story. The mission is open to the public and you can visit him anytime.

Whether or not your parents have been fortunate enough to live as great a number of years as Mr. Hope, chances are you have had a discussion with them at some point concerning end-of-life planning. Or perhaps the honor went to one of your siblings. Or a long-lost second cousin who suddenly appeared at their doorstep at 2 a.m. Even if you’ve enjoyed a caring parent-child relationship from early on, it’s never an easy conversation. They may question your motives: “Don’t worry about your inheritance, I’m leaving it all to my mistress;" or tell you their demise is “none of your business;" or “there’s nothing to be done because I’m never going to die.” Some have everything squared away ― a will, a trust, directives. Others vanish without a trace (legally speaking, that is).

In Resisted Living, when conflicts arise between decedents-to-be and beneficiaries-in-waiting, emotions flare, tempers rise, and regretful words are flung ― like in any family worth its weight in bequeathed tchotchkes. Amid the chaos and subterfuge, there is an eventual reckoning in one form or another. Because in the end, love means ― at a minimum ― not leaving the family fortune to a stray dog.

At least, not all of it.
