Nordhoff High School

  Notes from the Director

When I first mentioned to friends that I would be directing “Curtains” at Nordhoff High School, those not familiar with the show asked me some pretty funny questions, my favorite being: “So, is this show about a company that creates window treatments, or what?” I just kept saying; “Curtains,” you know, as in “It’s curtains for you, baby!” (a la movie mobster). Or, I would say: “Think curtains as in “the beginning or the end of a play.”

“Curtains” is a musical mystery comedy with a touch of farce, some obvious musical theater spoofs, confused identities, plot twists, and plenty of ridiculous dialogue (but I already said farce, didn’t I?). So, aptly named, “Curtains” is a little bit of all of the above - except for the part about curtains for your windows.

With music by Kander and Ebb (“Cabaret” and “Chicago”) you might hear tunes that seem familiar throughout the production. Even if we think we are about to hear “Willkommen” or “Cell Block Tango (He Had It Comin’),” we don’t care. It’s all just good fun, and we are loving it!

I would tell you more about what happens in “Curtains,” but then what kind of a madcap musical theater murder mystery would this be? We are all sworn to secrecy!

It is an honor and a privilege to work with these talented young performers and crew members. They are all incredible, and we’ve been having a great time working together. Thanks to all the wonderful families and volunteers! I also want to thank my fellow collaborators: Janet McNeil, Darrienne Lissette Caldwell, Griff Williamson, John Mirk, Walt Hamann, James Antunez, Andrew Eiden, Brianna Turner, and Haley René Culliton. Special thanks to Jim Halverson for his constant faith in me, and Bill Wagner for his incredible support along this journey.

I hope you enjoy the show, but shhhh!!  Even if you think you know who did it. . . are you absolutely sure it’s not someone sitting right next to you?? Bwahhaha!
