Director's Note:

In the fall of 2019, Mr. Lusher and I began teaching Chorus and Theatre at Old Donation School. We then began collaborating then on our first spring musical at ODS. We had big dreams and plans to put on Once Upon a Mattress in the Spring of 2020. As you know, the world changed drastically in March 2020 and put those plans to a halt.

The current group of 8th graders performing in Annie Jr. were Mr. Lusher and I's original class of 6th graders when we began teaching at ODS. We have seen them grow into wonderful performers and resilient humans. They have supported each other through every challenge life throws at them. We are so incredibly proud of the work they have done and how they have become an ensemble over the past few years.

When Mr. Lusher and I were selecting our spring musical for 2022, we not only looked at the cast members of the Music Ensemble Course, but also thought about Musical Theatre History, which we covered in class in the fall. When Annie was first produced in the late 1960s, it was written to counteract the mood of the "issue-driven musical." Annie was written as a response to the turbulent time in America of the 1960s-1970s and represented the idea that no matter how bad things get, "the sun will come out tomorrow." Mr. Lusher and I agreed that Annie would be the perfect musical to encourage audiences who may be seeing their first live performance since the pandemic.

We hope you enjoy the show!

Ms. Mitchell
