A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS
Dear Dunbar Theatre Family and Friends;
Thank you so much for supporting our program and welcome to this winter show. This production is an appropriate choice during this "Season of Love". Although it is not a story of romantic love, Charlotte's Web is a story of a deep, caring love. A story that is one of friendship, sacrifice and giving back to others.
Charlotte's Web is a book that is cherished by many and has been an important part of childhood since it was published in 1952. E. B. White's tale of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte has become a classic of children's literature, enjoyable to adults as well as children. In 2000 it was listed as the best-selling children's paperback of all time. It holds a very special place in both of our hearts, being a story that we remember with fondness and with love. It is also a story that we revisited many times and are happy to share with you.
The students in the cast have worked very hard to bring the characters of the book alive. All the enchanting characters are here: Wilber; Fern Arable and her family; the Zuckerman's and their hired hand; the other animals of the barnyard - Templeton the rat, the Goose and Gander, the Sheep and her Lamb; and of course the people of the county whose lives are changed by this "Terrific, Radiant and Humble Pig"; and most of all that extraordinary spider, Charlotte who wrote "Some Pig" in her web to help save Wilbur from a dark fate.
The story was adapted into an animated feature by Hannah-Barbera Productions in 1973 with a song score by the Sherman Brothers and has become a classic in it's own right. In 2006 Paramount Pictures produced a live-action film with Dakota Fanning as Fern and the voice of Julia Roberts as Charlotte. The film received positive reviews and was awarded a Critics' Choice Award for Best Family Film.
Joseph Robinette's 1983 stage adaptation of Charlotte's Web was done with the advice of E. B. White and captures the spirit of the book wonderfully. We are excited to present this tale of friendship and growing up, to you our audience. We hope that for those of you who read the book (or had it read to you by loving teachers or parents) will experience the warm and beautiful memories that you had back then all over again during the performance. And if by chance you have not read this hearwarming story before, you will now be able to experience the thrill of E. B. White's masterpiece.
Please sit back and listen to our three storytellers as they relate to us this enchanting tale. Thank you again for joining us and we hope that you will have a "terrific" time.
Sincerely,
Albert and Lori Carter
