A Note From the Director....

Urinetown: The Musical challenges your expectations and its self-awareness makes you think about what you are watching. And it fits into a tradition of satirical social commentary and protest in the theater. Starting with an absurd, exaggerated premise – that all the toilets in a city are controlled by one greedy corporation – the show makes us laugh while it explores real social issues. It uses the medium of theater to examine corporate control, corruption, environmental conservation and the growing divide between rich and poor. With its sense of humor and critical attitude, Urinetown draws our attention to some of the most pressing problems in contemporary society. But it also uses humor to parody those “do-gooders” who try to make societal change happen without thinking things through.

Do you recognize or identify with any of the Urinetown characters? In addition to some laughs, I hope you can leave the theatre tonight/today feeling superior to others who didn’t patronize one of the smartest musical satires in recent history.

This production is our final one of an incredible season. We have emerged from the pandemic with gratitude and renewed commitment to producing thoughtful, soulful and artful theatre for our community. We could not have done it without our incredible sponsors (SCFD, heART of Brighton, First Presbyterian Church of Brighton, Mark Humbert/Daily Post, BCAC and City of Brighton), our hardworking board of directors, the many generous volunteers and performers, the Armory and its wonderful staff and, of course, our faithful and supportive patrons.

We look forward to creating more love, laughter and theatrical spirit in 2023 and we hope that you may join us. Cheers!
