Greetings, I am Chester A. Arthur, 21st President of the United States.  Did you know I was never actually elected president?  I took over after James Garfield was assasinated.  By the time my term was over, no one in my party really supported me and I failed to win the nomination in 1884.  Alas, I neither won a presidential election nor ran in one.  Today, I'm one of the lesser known and unpopular presidents in history.  So much so that I bet you didn't even notice that that's a photo of Rutherford B. Hayes.  But, at least I'm not as unpopular as Mark Davenport.  That guy is a dweeb.

When I was first given the script to "The Election", I mistakenly thought it was a stage adapation of the 1999 film "Election" starrting Reese Witherspoon & Mathew Broderick.  The plot of that film concerns a race for class president between plucky honor student Tracy Flick & star athlete Paul Metzler.  Broderick, known to many up to that point as the cool and carefree Ferris Bueller, plays civics teacher Jim McAllister, who harbors a deep resentment for the overacheiving Flick.  Such is his hatred of Tracy that he tears down her campain posters and he even tries to rig the election against her.  "Election" was praised by critics, but ultimately failed to gain much traction at the box office.  Over two decades later, "Election" still holds up as one of the best political satires of all time.  I would love to see a sequel, where Flick, now President of the United States, sees her legislative agenda stalled by Speaker of the House McAllister.  #pickflick2024
