 Notes and Special Thanks

The winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Spring Awakening is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock and roll that has captivated audiences across the nation since its debut in 2006. It is based on the 1891 German play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind.

Spring Awakening is set in late nineteench century Germany. The teenagers in Spring Awakening are trying to come to grips with two clashing worlds: the confining, repressive society around them and their own world of sexual awakening, curiosity, confusion, and pain.

Many times you’ll see the characters pull hand mics out of their pockets or grab mics at times during the show.  As the creators of the musical imagined, although these students live in a world of social convention, their inner worlds are utterly electric.  When their feelings are so intense it's hard to speak, they break out of their 19th century confines, grab mics, express what's in their hearts and minds, and rock out!

Another unique part of this show is that the multiple adult characters are played by 2 actors, one man and one woman, without much to distinguish one from the other, with minimal costume changes.  Even if the audience can’t easily separate all these characters, the key is to see these adult roles all in the same mold as the students in the musical do – oppressors who are keeping them from evolving into the people they desire to become.

Join this group of late nineteenth century German students on their passage as they navigate teenage self-discovery and coming of age anxiety in a powerful celebration of youth and rebellion in the daring, remarkable Spring Awakening.

From Director Rodney Parks:

I would like to thank all the students, staff and families involved in the production.  I would like to dedicate this weekend to the late Tony D'Andrea for believing in me 38 years ago.  Without him none of these years would have been possible.
