Grease opened on Broadway in 1971 and was made into a film in 1978. There are some striking differences between the play and the film:

FILM

Sandy is American, living in the same town as

Danny.  In the opening scene she describes meeting Danny in the summer at a local swimming pool.

Sandy is Australian. In the opening scene, Danny and vacationing Sandy have fallen in love at the beach.

Sandy and Danny are re-united on the 1st day of school.

They’re re-united at the school bonfire.

Rydell High is located in Chicago.

Rydell High is a southern Pacific Coast school.

Marty sings “Freddy, My Love” about her marine finacee.

The song is not in the film.

Keneckie sings “Greased Lightnin’.”

Danny sings it in the movie.

Members of the rival gang, called the Flaming Dukes, are never seen.

The rival gang, led by Leo, is called the Scorpions and members are seen often.

Danny takes Rizzo to the dance but ends up with Cha Cha.

Danny takes Sandy to the dance but ends up with Cha Cha.

Rizzo goes to the dance with Danny but ends up with Kenickie.

Rizzo goes to the dance with Leo but leaves alone.

Sandy sings “It’s Raining on Prom Night.”

This song is replaced by “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”

At the drive-in, Sandy leaves Danny calmly, and he sings “Alone at a Drive In.”

At the drive-in, Sandy screams and throws a ring; Danny sings “Sandy.”

There is no drag race scene.

A pivotal drag race between the two gangs is held.

All of the  action takes place during the fall of the school year.

The movie begins on the 1st day of school and ends with the spring graduation carnival.
