Director's Note
Welcome to high school! This is a cautionary tale about bullying and social media and the damage it can cause if not used responsibly. Mean Girls the Musical offers a very real albeit slightly exaggerated perspective on how teens view themselves and are viewed by others in their communities and via social media. Ultimately, though, this show is about love, life, and being true to yourself. I chose Mean Girls this year because I wanted to give the students something current and relevant for them. The entire cast and crew have all been very excited to take on the characters, the situations, and really lean into the power of language highlighted in the musical. Mean Girls the Musical has become a favorite among Generation Alpha and has been a very popular choice among theater directors all over the globe and in high schools around the Bay Area this year. January 2024 saw the movie release of Mean Girls the Musical! The world just can’t get enough of Mean Girls! Mean Girls asks the audience to consider how they wield their words to uplift and demean and lays bare the power and psychological effects of social media. It literally hits people like a bus when social media posts get out of hand. I was lucky to see Mean Girls when it opened on Broadway in 2018. This show is clever, creative, and funny. I am delighted to bring it to you tonight. Tbh, it is totally FETCH!
