Broadway Revue - April 08 - April 10, 2021

Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Highschool

 End Notes

It has been an amazing year of theatre here at St. Michael the Archangel.  We started our year with Radium Girls, a bristling drama about corrupt corporations and the role of our own conscience in life.  We finish the year with this amazing amalgamation of Broadway musicals.  There are so many things to love about theatre and I think that this show embodies a great many of them.

Educational theatre is very much about the process rather than the final product.  Not to say that we don’t want our final product to be polished and entertaining, but our students have committed themselves to the beautiful process of theatre.  In this production, many students worked on their own time to develop solos and small groups to perform.  A tremendous amount of time went into this production outside of our normal daily rehearsals and for that, our students should be applauded.

Educational theatre is also about building relationships and learning to roll with the proverbial punches that come with any production.  As challenges came our way (such as snow days and sound issues) our slogan became simply, “That’s showbiz baby!”  In the theatrical world, there are a great many things that you can control but every now and then you come to a problem over which you have no control. That’s showbiz baby!

Finally, we attained a new level of appreciation for classic as well as contemporary Broadway musicals.  The Broadway musical has changed a lot throughout the years from Ragtime! (considered to be the first true American musical) to Oklahoma to Hamilton.  The Broadway musical is a true American art form and it embodies the American dream in a way that few others can.  Tonight is largely about escapism.  Sit back and enjoy this wonderful cabaret of poppy, showstopping, head-spinning musical numbers!
