Once Upon a Mattress - March 19 - March 21, 2026

Sandwich Community High School

 Director's Note

We're incredibly excited to be bringing you tonight's show. After many years of mostly first-time "premieres" of musicals at SHS, it's been a treat to spend the last three years now putting on shows that have been seen on our stage in the past, albeit in productions that predate our creative team. Once Upon a Mattress, a classic that dates back to 1959, was last presented by SHS twenty years ago--in 2006.

It's no surprise that this is a show that has endured and been a favorite for so many over the decades--the music is fun, the characters are memorable, and it reframes a classic fairy tale. It has provided a great showcase for the talent our program currently has at its disposal, and the students have truly embraced what this show has to offer.

It is always a real privilege to work with our student body in bringing these shows to life. Every year I am impressed and heartened by the level of commitment these young people bring to every aspect of putting together a production. Our cast, crew and pit orchestra is a potent mix of fresher and enthusiastic faces and more experienced hands--in addition to our stalwart seniors who've been around for every show, another special thing about this year and last is seeing some seniors step up who are relative newcomers to our stage. This is also the end of our fourth school year collaborating with students from nearby Somonauk High School, which means that for some this is the end of their creative journey with us. For them to have spent the last four years juggling differing school calendars to be involved with us is yet another remarkable display of dedication. This show could not be the success that it is without the contributions of each of the groups mentioned above. In theatre, there is an opportunity for each to make their mark, and this group has done just that.

To have spent another spring bringing together a large group of people, all pulling in the same direction, to create beautiful art has been a true pleasure. I would like to extend a sincere thank you and note of genuine appreciation for all those, students and staff, who make these productions possible year after year. Their contributions mean more than words can express.

Thank you for your support of the performing arts at Sandwich High School. We Hope you enjoy the show.
