A note from the Director What happens when we force ourselves into broken relationships? Sure, things might work out okay for some time, maybe even a long time, but how does it affect our own bodies? Mentally? Physically? The answer isn't always easy. Codependence is a nuanced beast. Domestic violence isn't always a one way street. Sometimes mental illness tells us the only remedy is substance abuse. Sometimes people feel that the only way out is to end it altogether. We often realize too late that to take care of ourselves, we need to let go of others. It is a hard but necessary decision to release toxic people from our lives. Alex Kump’s Porch explores the delicate balance of needing others and taking care of ourselves. Relationships, both platonic and romantic, are hard; Emotions are difficult; Heartbreaks are devastating; yet sometimes we find ourselves stuck to those who hurt us the most. With this production, my hope is that we realize that we need to put ourselves first: mentally, physically, and emotionally. It is okay to need someone, but completely relying on others only damages us in the long run.

A Little About Us
Second Star Repertory Theatre is a new theatre company based in Texas. In the arts there can be an overwhelming lack of diversity, and unfortunately theatre as an art form is not immune to this. Our mission is to produce works that emphasize inclusion of all types of people. Diversity is at the core of this company.
At Second Star we believe theatre belongs to everyone, no matter race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. Everyone has a story that deserves to be heard, and everyone has a place on our stage. We are a company that is just starting but our hope is that everyone can look to our stage and see someone like them, and see stories that they can relate to. We want to emphasize stories by playwrights who identify as LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and/or differently abled. There are so many voices in theatre that often go unheard, but our goal is to give those voices a place to scream, shout, whisper, cry, laugh, and more.
The accessibility of theatre is also at the heart of our company. Theatre is an art form that everyone should be able to experience; however, many people who may be unable to leave their homes, or participate in traditional theatre productions, theatre as an art can seem restricted. In this our inaugural season we are exploring ways to bring theatre beyond those privileged enough to see it. During times such as this we are exploring ways to bring theatre into peoples homes, and with our inaugural season we set out to do just that.
