Director's note -
da-da-da-DA (snap! Snap!)
Four notes are played, we snap twice, then are instantly transported into the creepy, kooky, and altogether ooky world of The Addams Family. The now famous characters - Morticia, Gomez, Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley, Grandma and Lurch have been described as ghoulish, macabre, bizarre and weird ... as well as adorable, charming, humorous, and captivating.
What began as a single-panel cartoon first appearing in ”The New Yorker” magazine in 1938 has become a pop culture phenomenon, with characters appearing on television, movies, music, merchandise, and commercials – and a popular Broadway musical, which we proudly present to you. The story is a simple one, leading us to discover that even the ‘strangest’ of families have the same joys, sorrows and fears that we all have. The Addams Family finds ways to overcome their challenges and work with what they have... as do we all. The messages are clear: Don’t be afraid to be different! Stay true to yourself! Follow your heart at all costs! Don’t go into a dark basement alone! But for me, the most important message is something the cast sings in the opening number - "family first and family last and family by and by."
One of the things I love most about this musical is that while it stays true to the irreverent spirit and morbid humor of the original comics, it also illustrates that though the unknown may be frightening, when we choose to be true to who we are on the inside, love and acceptance are still attainable. And just as important, the story pushes us to consider what is normal - as Morticia Addams wisely states, “Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is a calamity for the fly.”
So sit back, hum four notes, snap twice - and enjoy!
Take Care,
Danny Broome
