 director's note

“...Why, we’re right inside your heads.”

This line from the show is the impetus for this concept. We are introduced to a I was on a mission to find my purpose, and live a life that is extraordinary. As I revisited the show decades later, I was struck by that one line and thought, what if Pippin’s journey is actually a conversation about his need to find meaning in life as a result of his mental health? What if everything that he experiencing takes place in his head? What if these “players” are actually brain chemicals that activate every time he has moments of fear, joy, pain etc?

1 in every 5 Canadians experiences some form of mental illness, whether its depression, anxiety or addiction. Mental health is often stigmatized and swept under the rug for fear of not appearing capable. I want to be able to have an honest conversation about our own personal mental health journey and find solace in the community that share these same feelings. Especially during these trying times.

When Bob Fosse was given the opportunity to direct Pippin, he wanted to take the show to the next level by bending the rules and seeing its darker side. He was not convinced this show, as originally told, could resonate as sentimental. He wanted to push boundaries and introduce a new narrative by adding a Leading Player to lead Pippin through his journey. After following his instincts, Pippin went on to become a multi-award winning musical that still holds today. I am inspired by Fosse taking chances and not playing safe. To me, Pippin’s frustration doesn’t grow because he is unfulfilled by what he can’t achieve but frustrated by the unnecessary pressure he puts on himself to feel accomplished. I think a lot of people can relate to that.

Whether you know the story or not, I hope this show can invite conversation.

Welcome to Pippin: Reimagined!
