The Vagina Monologues was originally written and performed by Eve Ensler in 1996. Since then, it has been performed globally in thousands of communities and college campuses. In 1998, Ensler and others formed V-Day, an international non-profit organization dedicated to increasing knowledge about and eradicating violence against women. Since then, V-Day has raised over $75 million for women's anti-violence groups around the world.

The Smith College V-Day Campaign is proud to use proceeds from tonight's production of The Vagina Monologues to support Safe Passage, a Northampton-based shelter for survivors of domestic violence. Safe Passage houses dozens of women and children who have escaped violent situations, offers legal help to survivors, provide a domestic violence hotline, and offers survivors other community programs, such as job search resources and child care, that will enable them to move forward in their lives. We are proud to support Safe Passage's work in eradicating violence against women and families.

In our programs tonight, several monologues are marked with an asterisk. This asterisk marks the monologues that deal explicitly with narratives of violence done agains women, including physical violence, genital mutilation, and sexual assault. We recognize that these monologues may be triggering to survivors in the audience, and we encourage people to take care of themselves as they need during these difficult monologues.
