Director's Note
Even when the pandemic disrupted live theatre and so many other areas of our lives, my vision has not changed: to carry on Ken Bradbury’s legacy and to bring the message of this show to our community.
The Spirit of Lincoln is one of a hundred shows that Ken Bradbury wrote, but one that ended up being perfect for 2020, not only because it was adaptable to a pandemic, but because of the many themes of the show that are incredibly relevant to our community today. Bravery in the face of fear. Love in the face of hate. Justice in the face of inequality. This show is a tapestry of Central Illinois voices who were inspired by the duality of the average man and great American leader that is Abraham Lincoln.
While this show is about the spirit of Lincoln that dwells with us, I’ve joked that the show should also be titled The Spirit of Bradbury. Ken was a mentor and inspiration to me and many other Central Illinois folks. His writing was simple, truthful, and always spoke to each member of the cast and audience. Every moment I have spent on this show, I have spent time with Ken and with the gifts he left for us.
My hope is that you too experience the spirits of Lincoln and Bradbury still “walking around” our community.
