A Note from the Directors
Come and meet those dancing feet in 42nd Street, the classic Tony Award-winning, 1930s musical. Based on the 1932 novel by Bradford Ropes and the 1933 Hollywood film, this backstage musical follows the rehearsal process of a Broadway show staged during the height of the Great Depression.
42nd Street spins an inspiring story of Peggy Sawyer, a young and naïve dancer from Allentown, Pennsylvania, who heads to New York to audition for “Pretty Lady,” directed by the demanding and talented Julian Marsh. Peggy has an unusual audition but earns a spot in the chorus. The show struggles with the experienced and sophisticated leading lady, Dorothy Brock, who is having personal and professional challenges.
When Dorothy falls on opening night, Julian is faced with a crisis and, with the collective help of the cast, takes a chance on Peggy to learn the lead role in 36 hours. After non-stop rehearsals, pressure, and self-doubt, Peggy opens the show, and you will have to see how she does.
We, the production team of 42nd Street, are so excited to share our passion for the magic of live theatre. The cast, tech, and musicians have committed 8 weeks to creating characters, learning music, dancing, and building a visual world to bring you the story of 42nd Street the Musical. In actuality, they have lived on 42nd Street, and we are so immensely proud of each and every one of them. We would like to give a special shoutout to dance captains Maya Cassell, Natalie Van Dorpe, Holly Stone, and director’s assistant Charlotte Woods for their incredible time and dedication to this show.
We would also like to thank Ryan Colton for the extra time in dealing with such a large and complicated costume plot, Amy Lord for a beautiful set, Michael Molloy and Andy Masters for the beautiful music, and Rebecca LaPorta and St. Charles North for their support in producing a show that continues to inspire and entertain audiences and future performers.
We look forward to sharing our passion with you.
